About Ruth Greenberg

Immersed in the natural world while living in the coastal Connecticut town of her youth, Ruth Frances Greenberg developed a keen sensitivity for the connection between beauty and well-being. As a child she loved to make things with her hands, and she found inspiration in nature—a source that informs her work today.

Greenberg studied under Paul Soldner and Bev Magennis. During her education she built a strong technical foundation in ceramics, which was complemented by her passion for innovation. Later, she developed a new approach to the classic mosaic craft, which is the method Greenberg still employs. Greenberg’s “wet-clay method” uses the malleability of wet clay to create unique and intricate expressions in mosaics that realize the unprecedented aesthetic she is known for.

Since 1995, Greenberg and her team of artisans have been creating mosaic for clients nationwide. In early 2000, she found herself taking on the title of inventor. Faced with the conundrum of just how to finish off the look of fireplaces, Greenberg filled a decorative gap in interior design by creating and patenting her fireproof and durable Firebox Tiles.

Greenberg currently shares her Portland, Oregon, studio with her musician husband and her team of artisans. She continues to create mosaics and Firebox Tiles for public and private spaces, as well as develop new concepts for her Ann Sacks “Perennial” line.
